Collagen Cross-Linking

It is an invasive surgical technique developed in the last decade to treat keratoconus. It is a treatment that inhibits the development of keratoconus and also helps to stabilize or improve vision.

Collagen cross-linking process:

The treatment is relatively painless and it is performed in the operating room, under local anesthesia using eyedrops. Initially the corneal epithelium is removed, which is the most superficial layer of the cornea, followed by instillation of a solution of riboflavin (vitamin B2) in the form of eyedrops for 10 minutes. After the impregnation of the deeper layers of the cornea with riboflavin is detected, the cornea is irradiated with a suitable type of laser for 3 minutes.
